Giclee Printmaking…Some Frequently Asked Questions

What identifies a Legacy Giclee  from other giclee prints?

  1. Legacy Giclees are printed for Pam Stevens and represented on the Dunn’s Catalog web site.  Legacy Giclees conform to archival standards consistant with collectible fine art.

  1. Legacy Giclees are produced selectively using “pigment” based archival inks, no dyes are used.

  1. The Legacy Giclee  process includes materials of archival quality and produced by a reputable printing company.

  1. The Legacy Giclee logo represents the highest standards of expertise and ethical practice available in the digital printmaking profession.

  1. Legacy Giclees are produced one-at-a-time, combining traditional printing craftsmanship with the newest art technology.  In order to print a Giclee it requires a professional photographer with a format camera to produce a 4”x 5” transparency, then a professional technician creates a drum scan up to the original size of the artwork on a CD.  The digital scan is then used to produce the Giclee in the printing process.

  1. The members of the production of Legacy Giclees maintain an ongoing working relationship with suppliers and manufacturers of archival materials, software & equipment manufacturers.

  1. What sets Giclee prints apart from traditional offset lithography is the color quality, richness, and resolution.  Giclee prints are recognized worldwide.  A tremendous advantage the artist has by producing a Giclee is being able to print almost any size for customizing prints.

  1. We recommend that you treat your Giclee prints the same as any original watercolor.  It should be protected from water and should not be placed in direct sunlight.  The most important fact to remember is that color fades.  As far as the Giclee prints are concerned, some original watercolors fade faster than a well-made Giclee.  Legacy Giclees use archival paper and canvas which have been estimated to last up to 120-130 years for the paper and long term expectancy for the canvas.  All printing companies do not conform to well-made archival Giclees.  Legacy Giclees conform to the highest standards available at the time of printing.  The artist treats the Legacy Giclee prints all one-at-a-time with a digital printing spray protector that is applied synthetic that does not yellow and acts as a liquid lamination.  Due to high sunscreen content it helps slow fading, acts as a waterproofing and extends the durability of the giclee.  The spray aids in the overall protection and life of the print, however careful treatment is desirable.  This product has limited liability due to the fact we are unable to control the nature in which the customer stores the giclees.  Legacy Giclees and the company representing the giclees are not liable and can not be sued for situations involving acts of mother nature, smoke, water, poor storage, or misuse of giclees in any way.  Framing with matting and glass is required for the Giclees on paper.  The Giclees on canvas can be framed but no glass is needed.

  1. Legacy Giclees are a limited edition series of 500 per image.  This insures to the buyer that they have purchased a quality print, each one having special attention from the time of printing  to the delivery.  Shipping is handled directly from the printer.  Due to handling time being on an individual basis, your Legacy Giclee should arrive within 15 working days of the order taken.  Each Giclee is handled by the artist in order to apply the varnish and/or the stretching process for the canvas Giclees.  The artist can indivually hand touch and sign with paint applied to the giclee if desired.   For an additional fee and time allowance the artist can personally make your Giclee individually unique by your request.

  1. Legacy Giclees images are strictly confidential.  The artist does not allow any images to be printed without her permission.  All digital files of the artist’s images can be destroyed only at the permission of the artist.

Giclee (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is a high resolution/high definition ink jet print on canvas or paper.  This technology provides more DPI or dots per inch than traditional off set lithography, allowing more detail and color quality.  The image of the original painting is digitally drum scanned at a high resolution (the size of the original work of art) and digitally stored in a computer and sent directly to a high resolution ink jet printer.  Archival materials are used.  See Frequently Asked Questions under Giclee Printmaking
